Freelance hitman, Will Robie, has a mission which takes him first to Edinburgh and then to Tangier. His task is to eliminate suspected enemies of the US government. But back in DC, when government employee and mother of two, Denise Tamaron, is detailed as his next target, Robie fails to pull the trigger. She's an unlikely victim, and why does she pose a threat to national security?
Having failed in his mission, Robie needs to leave the scene fast. But it seems that he is not the only one who is on the run and in danger. On his escape from the city, he saves a young teenage girl from an unknown killer. She's too scared to reveal her true identity and why, if indeed she knows, there are those who want her dead.
The police investigating the deaths start to take an interest in Robie. And he's particularly attracting the attention of a tenacious female investigator who believes the two cases may be connected. Robie finds himself a fugitive in a dangerous position. Does he need to change sides to save lives - including his own?

An extraordinary story
The Innocent by David Baldacci My first book by Mr Baldacci and it was a fantastic one. Everything an international assassin thriller should be. Will Robie is an American assassin, he’s sent in to kill a US citizen. But balks as a child lifts their head and there begins story that blends a child’s lost patents with an international terrorist and yeah, it’s American, so the president is under threat yet again, but in this case it actually fits into the scheme. The story builds and builds throughout, no hesitation in the story anywhere, a rather complex plot gets laid out so clearly there’s no concern with missing pieces towards the end. A great story which I finished within 24hours (always a good sign) so 5/5.

The Innocent
Another great read...recommend hugely....

The Innocent
While this book was, as usual, well written, the overwhelming feeling I got was that an algorithm, or penny-a-line writer somewhere had written the book from an outline inspired by David Baldacci. I happen to enjoy his yarns, so my view is favourably biassed towards his stories and his writing technique. In “The Innocent”, I felt a tad like I was eating cotton candy. Every bite I took finished up with nothing in the mouth. I guess the willing suspension didn’t work in the opening chapters. While the characters had meat on them, the storyline didn’t. As “Robbie” lurched from crisis to crisis, I was reminded of Robert Ludlum, towards the end of his novel series. The tension was a tad manufactured and to my way of thinking, frankly left questions that were largely unanswered. I mean, Mr Baldacci tied it up in a neat bow by the end. It was the process on getting there which troubled me. James Gillard

Page turner from start to finish

Cheap airport paperbacks
Very basic writing style, poorly edited, unforgivable technical errors in describing the core capability of the central characters. Honestly, does anyone seriously edit books in this genre? These are airport rack novels. Characters are likeable enough, but i'd rather re-read a 30 year old Alistair Maclean or Jack Higgins.

A good read
I enjoyed TheCamel Club so read the reviews on this one and read the sample. No flashes of humour in this one although the main character is just as heroic and endowed with all the super talents. This book is a well paced page turner and delivered what I expected from this author.....an easy and enjoyable read.
